Pope’s Hill Gundog Trainer

In March 2018, the Trustees of the Gundog Club announced that as from September 2018 the Gundog Club would only accredit Force Free trainers. You can read more about this here.

This announcement has several implications. Right now, in the first half of 2018, the Club is in a state of transition. We have some trainers that have been confirmed as Force Free and others that are still going through a reaccreditation process. This instructor has not (yet and may or may not be) been accredited as a Force Free instructor.

Annie Wales is a Gloucestershire Gundog Club Instructor.  Her training facilities are located near Westbury on Severn.

She has been involved with the Gundog Club since its inception when she  joined the panel of advisers involved in setting up the Grades.

Annie has  trained Golden Retrievers and Labradors to Field Trial standard and had success with both breeds.

She teaches retrievers at all Grades and Spaniels and HPRs to Grade Three.   You can contact Annie using this form:  contact Annie Wales

Experience and Facilities

Annie has an Honours Degree in Education and has been a Secondary School teacher for over twenty-five years.

Her wealth of experience in instructing people complements her experience as a dog trainer,  when it comes to teaching people how to train their dogs.

Annie’s training grounds offer grass meadows, water, jumps and various types of cover.

Gentle discipline

Annie is not a believer in harsh training methods as she has never found these to produce the best results, however she is a great believer in giving the dog a clear framework  in order to make it easy for him to understand what is required of him.

“It is this gentle discipline which enables the dog, like the child, to be able to show his true potential.  How exciting is that?”  says Annie

All gundogs are welcome

Annie is pleased to welcome both pet and working gundogs into her classes,  and runs gundog courses for beginners upwards during the spring and summer.  In the winter when Annie is busy picking up and trialling she concentrates on one-to-one sessions

Annie and her dogs

Annie cannot remember a time when there haven’t been dogs in her life – her family had an assortment of Spaniels ,Golden Retrievers and Labradors over the years, very much part of the family, and as a child it was her great pleasure to take whichever dogs she had at the time out onto the shooting field.

Gloucestershire gundogsSince she grew up Annie has become as bit more serious about gundog work and has been lucky enough to attend training sessions with some of the greatest gundog trainers in the country.

Her fifteen year old Golden Retriever in his prime won nine Open Field Trial awards and the remainder of her dogs (some of which are pictured above)  are Labradors,  all of which have won Field Trial awards.

For the past two years Annie has been asked to run training classes for The Flatcoated Retriever Club over the summer which has increased her understanding  and appreciation of the breed.

Annie has run training seminars abroad in Portugal, South Africa and Sweden where she has returned annually for five years and last summer with her friend Hilary, Annie  judged the French Championship Working Test in the grounds of the beautiful  castle of Montigny le Ganilon.

Annie was Working Test Secretary for the Golden Retriever Club for 7 years and after that Field Trial Secretary for the Bristol & West Working Gundog Soc. for 7 years and says that she has learned an incredible amount from each position.  She is still on the Committee of the Bristol & West and Cotswold & Wyvern Clubs and has been teaching Graded Training to Gundog Club students since 2006.
