Devon (Lewdown, Okehampton) Gundog Club Instructor

In March 2018, the Trustees of the Gundog Club announced that as from September 2018 the Gundog Club would only accredit Force Free trainers. You can read more about this here.

This announcement has several implications. Right now, in the first half of 2018, the Club is in a state of transition. We have some trainers that have been confirmed as Force Free and others that are still going through a reaccreditation process. This instructor has not (yet and may or may not be) been accredited as a Force Free instructor.

Zoe Townsend is the Gundog Club’s instructor for Cornwall based in Gunnislake  – she also has ground in West Devon at Lewdown, Okehampton.

She has been teaching people to train Gundogs since 2011, starting at the West Dartmoor Working Gundog club and then building her business to take on clients and their dogs directly.

She works her dogs, and has been picking up and beating for the past twelve years – for the last seven of those she has picked up in a professional capacity, as well as beating with Cocker and English Springer spaniels. She now works a team of 5 dogs on 2 commercial shoots in Devon.

Zoe competes successfully with both retrievers and spaniels in tests and trials.  The most recent win with her Labradors Griffin was in a December 2016 Novice trial. She has organised tests and trials, and she has judged working tests, both novice and open.

Everyone welcome

Zoe is ideally placed to help those looking to go on and work or compete with their dogs, but she welcomes everyone and pets and pet Gundogs are welcome in her classes – she is as happy to help people have fun with a well-trained pet as she is to coach people wishing to work or compete with their dogs.

Zoe offers both group training and 121 lessons. She particularly enjoys helping people with young dogs get off to the right start, and working with students who have difficult dogs on a 1-1 basis, seeing them gain confidence to overcome problems and succeed with their dogs.

Supportive and friendly classes

She believes dogs and people learn best in a supportive, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. In addition to her work with dogs, Zoe is a teacher by profession. She began teaching piano at the age of eighteen on a one to one basis and gained a degree in music from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, then went on to do a PGCE in primary education at Hertfordshire University. Now she brings her experience as a professional teacher to help her in her work teaching people to train Gundogs.
