New page, getting started with gundog trainingWhere to begin!  There is so much to think of.

How do I start training,  how should I be managing my first gundog?

Is my dog even suitable for gundog training?

We look at these questions and more with our new ‘getting started‘  page.

Dear Sirs,
I am very keen to learn about getting started with a gundog, I feel, with the view to taking part in the Gundog Working Tests. I have been gathering information through meeting people and I met a nice lady the other day (Olivertash Gundogs) who suggested I go along to watch and learn at a club/training sessions for a while before going ahead to buy a puppy. I wonder if you could kindly tell me if you know of any clubs/meetings etc in my area. I live in Marlborough, Wiltshire. I see there is an instructor in Salisbury, Wiltshire – not very near to where I live, but nevertheless, I could contact him to visit where he instructs, if he is my nearest point of contact?
I would be so glad to hear back from you and if you can think of any other way I could gain knowledge, any literature I could read, I would be very grateful for your suggestions. I will not be buying a puppy until next year, so plenty of time to learn about the sport!
Kind regards,
Claire Salter

Hi Claire, do get in touch with Nick at Salisbury, he will able to point you in the right direction. There may be a session you can watch to get an idea of what goes on. We also do a range of books to accompany the grades which you can take when you are ready. The first one is all about getting of to a good start with your puppy. You can find them in our bookshop
