Important notes on the use of a starting pistol

KEEP YOUR KIT IN A SMART DUMMY  BAG

A starting pistol is subject to the laws on 'imitation firearms'.  For this reason, it is important that they are used with great care.

The fact that the user is aware that their starting pistol is harmless, is not relevant.

Anyone observing a person with starting pistol may believe it to be a firearm.   This may cause great fear and distress to a member of the public.   It may also result in the police being called out to deal with a 'firearms incident'

Not only would such an event be a waste of police time,  it would also be very distressing to the person using the starting pistol and others in  the vicinity and could result in prosecution.

The following may help you use your starting pistol within the law.  If in  any doubt,  check with your local police station.
  • Ensure that you use your starting pistol only on private land
  • Ensure that you have the permission of the landowner to use the starting pistol
  • Ensure that you cannot be observed using the starting pistol by any members of the public at any time. (Be aware of where public footpaths may cross or border the land you are on)
  • Ensure that the starting pistol is kept completely covered at all times when not in use
