Fourteen people braved the North Yorkshire weather on the first weekend of December to attend a gundog weekend run by CAST dog training at Leeming Bar.

The weekend was open to all gundog breeds and comprised of Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, Labradors, Spanish Water dogs and Weimaraner's.

The weekend started with a training day in preparation for those taking the Gundog Club Graded Tests.  Handlers recapped on basic commands, heelwork, steadiness, straight line work, retrieves and improving hunting skills.

Sunday dawned with rain and ten nervous people all pacing in anticipation for their test.  Denise Hubbard (assessor for the Gundog Club) battled with the wind and rain as she assessed all ten dogs.

Eight people took grade one tests with their dogs and two took grade two. Denise announced at the end of the day that everyone had passed with distinction.  She commented she was very impressed with the high standard of the dogs and encouraged them all to continue and progress with their gundog work.

The students are pictured above from left to right: Tracy Higgot and Hattie, Richard Waite and Kyra, Mary Waite and Jenny, Lynn Whitelaw with Ash and Forrest, Denise Hubbard (gundog club assessor) Andy Cooper and Skye, Matt Phair with Teal, Caroline Penistone and Patch, Tracy Elliott with Jade.

Many thanks to Caroline Butler for sending us this report.  Caroline also wanted to praise Assessor Denise Hubbard for her professional service and for encouraging all the students who were very nervous initially.

Pauline Jackson from Druidale and Caroline Butler from CAST dog training were delighted with the outcome especially as this was the first Gundog Field Test weekend they had organised.  All the profit from the weekend was donated to Samsalin Dog Rescue to help re-home working gundogs.
