Some of you  contacted us with concern because you had heard that the 'blank firers' or 'starting pistols' that you own and use for dog training may now be banned.   We in turn contacted our suppliers and they assured us that the blank firing revolvers that we sell in our shop are not affected by the forthcoming ban which refers to one specific make of blank firer which we do not, and have not,  stocked.

We have now been asked by the Association of Chief Police Officers of England, Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland to post up the following further information.

From the 4th June 2010, it will be illegal to posses an Olympic BBM firearm anywhere in the UK .  The move follows an assessment of the firearm by the Forensic Science Service which found it to be ‘readily convertible’ and concluded it should be classified under Section 1 and Section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968.

‘Following a review of recovered firearms and intelligence across the UK a decision was taken to hold an amnesty in England and Wales to allow individuals to dispose of these weapons ahead of the ban.  ACPOS is fully supportive of the amnesty however after carefully considering the examination results from firearm recoveries in Scotland , it was deemed unnecessary for forces in Scotland to participate.

‘Although forces in Scotland are not taking part in the amnesty, if individuals are in possession of these weapons and wish to dispose of them ahead of the ban, they should contact their local force’

As such, from 4th June 2010 the Olympic .380 BBM becomes a prohibited weapon under the Firearms Act 1968 and possession will be unlawful. Please note that possession of a firearms licence does not permit legal ownership.

You can continue to buy and use our starting pistols provided you do so in a manner that is legally acceptable.  Please note that our pistols  are now  coloured orange.  You can find  Guidance here

If you are not sure whether the ban applies to your own starting pistol, you should contact your local police authority for advice without delay.  We understand there will be a few week's amnesty during which owners can hand over the banned revolvers without prosecution
