Gundog Club
training is divided into six achievable stages. The
first goal on your gundog training journey is to
reach the standard of the Grade One Field
Test.
This gives you
a precise set of simple standards to aim for. But
before you begin, there are four questions you
should be able to answer.
-
Do you have a
suitable dog?
-
Do you know your category?
-
Do you have some basic equipment?
-
Should you book some lessons?
1.
A suitable dog: Not sure if your dog is
suitable for gundog training? Worried he might
be too old, or the wrong breed?

2.
Know your category: There are three different
'styles' of training to choose from. You need
to know what category of gundog you own in order to
choose the right style of training.
Which category is my dog?
3.
Basic equipment: You will need just a few
items of very simple equipment to make a start with
your training. If you are going to start training by
yourself, without an instructor, you will also need
a well laid out reference book.

4.
Book some lessons:
If you are confident,
you can begin to train your dog
by yourself, following the Gundog Club guidebooks.
At some point however, you are likely to need some lessons.
Many students find it helpful to have some lessons
early on in the training process to get them off on
the right foot.
