Junior training courses: Grade
Two courses are aimed at those whose dogs have
either passed their Grade One award, or have reached
the Grade One standard. One dog per handler. Each
eight
week course consists of weekly one hour sessions.
Trainers will provide instruction, support and
demonstrate correct techniques to help students make
good progress. Students will be expected to
practice regularly at at home in between lessons.
Small groups: Groups will usually
consist of a maximum of six students to enable
proper attention to each class member and to
minimise distractions to the dogs.
Courses will be held in several locations:
We will arrange courses in any area where there is
both the demand and a suitable trainer.

Categories of gundog: Most Grade
Two courses are suitable for retrievers. Many are
also suitable for spaniels, and crossbred dogs
of this type. Check the course details for the
course you are interested in, to make sure that your
preferred category is included.
The Grade One standard:
In order to attend
this course, you will need to have taken your dog up
to the standard required to pass the Grade One field
test. If you have neither working through the
'Passing Grade One' training guide, nor successfully
completed a Grade One test, you must ensure that you
can answer 'yes' to all of the following questions,
before booking a place on a Grade Two course:
-
will your dog run out 20 yards to a dummy thrown
in clear view by an assistant?
-
will he pick the dummy up cleanly and return
directly to you with it, without delay or
diversions?
-
will he hand you the dummy cleanly and remain at
your side while you replace his lead?
-
will your dog walk 20 yards on a lead close to
your side without pulling or lagging behind, and
without reminders or tugging on the lead?
-
will your dog sit on a single command and remain
seated whilst you walk 20 yards away without
reminders?
-
will he remain seated for two minutes
(retrievers) without reminders?
-
will your dog come directly to you from 20 yards
away when he is recalled by whistle, and remain
under control at your side whilst you replace
the lead?
-
will he do all of the above consistently and
reliably in any quiet outdoor location?
If
you are unsure whether your dog is ready, we
recommend that take the dog out, with a friend to
act as the dummy thrower, and run through the Grade
One test with him on at least two separate occasions
and in two separate locations. If you aren't ready,
take a look at the
Grade One
courses.
Grade Two Test: The final week of
the course will include the Grade Two test.
