Basic equipment
A
healthy dog, preferably with some working gundog
genes!
It is
important that your dog is in good health, and
of gundog origins. Many popular pet dog breeds are
gundogs. Is my dog a
gundog?
It
doesn't matter how old the dog is, though younger
dogs may make faster progress. If your dog was
bred from working parents you may find training a
little easier. Show dogs can often do quite well in
basic training training but may lack hunting or
retrieving instincts. If you are not sure that
your dog has what it takes, you can book an
introductory session with one of our trainers and

A
reference book
The
Gundog Club published some books for beginners to
gundog training. It is important that you buy
the right book. For puppies under 5 months old
you will need The Right
Start.
For
young dogs over 5 months, or for older dogs, choose
Passing Grade One.
This will give you all the information you need to
take your dog up to the standard of the very first
Gundog Club Field Test Award.
Basic
equipment
You will
need some simple equipment. For puppies under
five months you will need a
1/2lb retrieving dummy.
For dogs
over five months old you will need a
1lb retrieving dummy
You will
also need a gundog sliplead,
and a gundog whistle
Getting help
You can train your dog
by yourself, following the guidebook. A
great way to get help is to join a Gundog Club
training course. Your dog must be over six
months old to join a Grade One course. Each
one lasts eight weeks and culminates in the Grade
One Field Test. Find
