On 13th November the government launched an exciting new initiative to enable petitions to be delivered directly to the Prime Minister via an online service.  E-petitions are essentially no different to the traditional paper versions that have been delivered by post or handed to 10 downing Street for many years.  But petitioners will now be able to reach greater numbers than ever before by connecting people across the web and allowing them to sign up.

Hunt campaigner Nick Onslow has set up a petition to support the fight for a repeal to the hunting act.    This petition already has more than four times more signatures than any other and is growing rapidly.  It takes less than a minute to fill in the form, you will need to give a valid email address and verify receipt of an email to it,  for your vote to be counted.  You will also need to give your address but this information will not be made public.

The petition is worded as  follows:

Petitioners know that The Hunting Act 2004: has done nothing for animal welfare; threatens livelihoods in the longer term; ignores the findings of Lord Burn's Enquiry; gives succour to animal rights extremists; is based on political expedience following the Prime Minister's unconsidered response on the television programme Question Time in 1999; is framed to persecute a large minority who support a traditional activity; does not command popular support in the country except amongst the uninformed and mal-advised

Is there any point?

Supporters of our rural traditions may rightly feel aggrieved that the largest protest march ever at that point in time to have taken place was ignored by the government,  and perhaps some may be feeling that their views will not be heeded.    However, much has happened since 400,000 of us walked through the streets of London to show our support for our traditional rural way of life, and we should not miss an opportunity to stand up and be counted once more.
