Training information

We are delighted to feature Winston (right) on the website this week, as an example of what can be achieved by positive-only training methods.  Positive-only trainers use no aversives in training at all.   This can be quite a challenge when training in the field,  but Winston's owner Denise Hubbard has proven that she is up to the task.

If you have a success story to tell about your dog (it does not have to be positive-only trained) we would like to hear from you.   Contact us

Early Promise

Showing plenty of early promise in 2002 Black Labrador Winston won Clwyd Retriever Club’s shield for the highest points overall scored by a puppy in working tests.

By the following year he had won a novice test beating 19 other dogs and was ready to move on to Opens at 16 months old.

Winston now has a string of Open 1st, 2nds and 3rds  to his credit including the following wins:

  • 2004 The Game Conservancy Trust Gundog Open test  -  scored the highest points and was awarded "The Barker Group Cup"

  • 2004 Anglesey Retriever Club   1st in "Open" Cold Game test

  • 2005 BASC Wales Country fair at Bodelwyddan Castle 1st out of 32 dogs

Winston has also represented the Clwyd Retriever club in team events and is now working on picking up and training for field trials.    He has the benefit of some great genes and was  bred,  by owner and handler Denise Hubbard,  Winston’s  father is FTCH Garendon Captain, and his mother is by FTCH  Aughacasia Sam

Winston's handler

A keen clicker traininer, Winston's handler Denise Hubbard is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) She has a number of canine behaviour qualifications and is currently studying for a foundation degree in Canine/behaviour/training at Bishop Burton college.

Field Trials?

There is quite a leap from working tests to field trials.   No positive-only trained dog has yet made it to FTCH.  Will Winston be the first?   In Denise' capable hands, he certainly stands a chance.  The Gundog Club wishes Winston and Denise every success in the future.   We hope to keep in touch with Denise and let you know how Winston gets on.
