Hand signals

Lottie is confidently following hand signals to right and left now.  As you can see from the photo,  I am still doing quite exaggerated signals and am only a few feet away from her.  She waits nicely for the signal and sets off with a huge leap.  I hope to 'tone down'  the signals over the next few days.    We have now practiced this in a number of different locations,  and this morning for the first time, repeated the session away from the fence in the centre of the field.  This went well.

Stop whistle

Lottie has no problem dropping into a sit from a run whilst at heel, and we have been practicing this all week.  This morning,  I had a brief try at getting her to sit to whistle whilst a few feet from me in the training field.  She was not able to understand what I wanted,  and kept trying to run to me before sitting.

Later on in the day,  I put Lottie into a small enclosed patio in my garden.   Here we practiced with her running about and me blowing the whistle and stepping towards her forcefully with a strong verbal reminder and hand signal when she tried to approach me before sitting.  By the end of the session she was really getting the idea,  and we finished with half a dozen smart sits to whistle at about six feet from me.  I will do some more sessions like this before again attempting a remote sit in the field.

The Stay

Today Lottie did her two minute stays at 7 yards and also  20 second stays at 20 yards.  All went well.

Groupwork

We have not done much groupwork this week as two of my spaniels are now heavily pregnant.  However, my daughter Sammie has agreed to handle my young lab  Bella for me for our next a few sessions,  which will give me more scope for exercises in pairs and working with distractions for Lottie, as I will be able to concentrate fully on her whilst another dog is 'in action'.   Bella has taken very readily to a 'new handler' and today worked well for her.

Canvas dummies

On Lottie's last retrieve this morning I substituted a canvas dummy (of the type she will be retrieving in her Grade One test) for her usual white plastic one.  She was a little surprised at the extra weight,  but brought it in with no problems.
