Lottie’s heelwork continues to be very good and I have begun introducing distractions.    I can now heel her off lead around dummies on the ground and around people without her breaking her position.  Today for the first time I introduced another dog into the equation.

I brought out my youngest cocker Meg and sat her up in the field.   I then walked Lottie past and around her, on the lead to begin with and then with the lead off.

As you can see below, at first Lottie was keen to interact with Meg. However, a brief 'no'  was sufficient to maintain her position.

It is annoying to have to backtrack like this,  but it was inevitable that something would suffer after a training break of several weeks.

In the meantime I am very pleased with Lottie's progress in heelwork,  and will be able to introduce some more 'group'  exercises over the next few days.  We  finished up our session today with a nice walk in the frosty field with Lottie and Meg together.

After a few circuits around Meg,  I removed the lead and Lottie continued to walk nicely to heel  with just a couple of brief reminders and lots of praise.   We then moved on the the 'stay'  which has been giving me some problems over the last few days.

Lottie’s stay has really suffered from our break in training.   Over the last few days she has begun lying down and trying to ‘belly crawl’  after me  -  something I tend to associate with cockers.  To keep her sitting up I find it helps to keep moving around her. Today we practiced this with her sitting with Meg.

As you can see Lottie is desperately trying to keep me in her view.

To sort out the 'stay' problem,  I am going to go right back to the beginning and do a refresher course in 'stay',  starting with very brief stays at short distances and building up again.
