The weather has been very wet and windy recently so we took advantage of a gap in the clouds today, to take some pictures of Lottie.

Today we passed quite a landmark in Lottie's training.  I decided to take the clicker delivery which I have been teaching her in the yard,  out into the field.   Although I have been very pleased with the results at home in the yard, I wasn’t sure how she would react with the distractions of a windy day,  heaps of rabbit scent everywhere,  and the memory of her poor delivery here in the past.

I threw four dummies in all, the first two quite close to me and the last two further out.    Apart from running in on the third dummy ( we have some more practice to do on steadiness)  I was delighted to see how completely she had absorbed the new delivery training.

I did not have to adjust my own position at all. On every return, she aligned herself precisely in front of me and offered up the dummy,  holding on until I said ‘dead’.

Ah well, at least the little ‘run in’ shows that the yard work we have been doing has not dented her enthusiasm for the retrieve.

What this now means is that I can move on with Lottie’s retrieving and make our training sessions together more interesting.   I will be trying the new delivery in a variety of locations over the next few days, to make sure the training is thoroughly generalised.

Once my youngsters have all broken up from school and college over the next week or so,  I

will have some regular 'assistants' to throw dummies for me.

Interestingly,  in the US where most training is done with the help of assistants (they call them bird boys), marks that you throw out for your own dog are known as 'poor man's marks' !

I'll let you know how we get on.
