Lottie

The objective of Lottie's diary is to document the life of a working gundog puppy from her first day in her permanent home.  We hope to show how gundog training progresses through good times and bad, and to follow Lottie right through to the completion of her education, until she takes her place as a fully trained working gundog.

Lottie is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.  At the time of writing,  Chesapeakes are fairly unusual in the UK.  Only about 140 were registered with the Kennel Club in 2005 compared with around 45,000 Labrador Retrievers

Lottie is owned by hobby gundog trainer and founder of The Gundog Club  - Pippa Mattinson

Pippa will record Lottie's progress and post regular reports on this website.  If you would like to ask questions or make comments about Lottie's training, or to give Pippa advice, you may post on The Gundog Club forum: here

Your views will be most welcome

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have acquired a 'certain reputation', many feel unfairly, for being somewhat sullen and difficult to train.

They have not featured much in field trial awards in this country,  though they are both successful and popular in the field in their native America.   Some claim their absence from top FT awards is due to a tendency to vocalise.   Rather less of a sin in the USA,  but unacceptable in Britain.

It is necessary to go back several generations in Lottie's pedigree to find a dog with working titles,  therefore there will be for some time, a question mark over her 'drive'  or working ability.

Pippa's first priorities with Lottie are:

  • Attention to socialisation to instil confidence and help prevent aggression

  • Discouragement of noise from the beginning

  • Encouragement and development of 'drive'
