Different ways to train a gundog

There are over 40 accredited Gundog Club trainers listed on our instructor’s page. All of these instructors are skilled, capable people, who not only have experience of training dogs for field work, but also have a track record of teaching people to train dogs.

Different instructors, however, have different skills. Some instructors specialise in training retrievers, some hunting retrievers, and some HPRs. Other instructors have experience in training many different breeds. Some instructors are enthusiastic about helping people with pet gundogs, others are more interested in helping people work or compete with their dogs. Some do both. So do look at the descriptions of the kind of services different instructors offer, and feel free to ask more using the contact forms for the instructor you are interested in visiting.

One main difference between instructors is whether or not a trainer is a ‘force-free’. What we mean by ‘force-free’ is explained here. All Gundog Club accredited instructors commit to ‘no harsh handling’ of gundogs, in line with the Gundog Trust’s charitable objective to promote the humane treatment and welfare of gundog breeds. But if you are specifically looking for a force-free instructor, then you need to choose from one of the instructors on the following list:

DEVON (Blackborough) Leanne Smith
